Overview of the Klingon Empire

The humanoid species known throughout the Alpha Quadrant as "Klingon" is a robust warrior race hailing from Qo'noS (also referred to as "Kling" or "Klinzhai") - an M-class planet found in the southeast sectors of the quadrant. The Klingon Empire borders both the Federation and Romulan Star Empire, and is considered one of the major political powers of the region. The Klingon Empire maintains what is widely considered the third largest standing naval fleet in the Alpha Quadrant, ranking only after the Federation and the Dominion.

Although capable of supporting humanoid life (hence its M-class designation), the planet Qo'noS is considered by many to be inhospitable and unpleasant - an attitude influenced as much by its inhabitants as terrain. The planet has a single large ocean and a few middle-sized seas. Roughly half of the planet's single landmass is mountainous and volcanic - uninhabitable by even the Klingons' spartan standards. The rest of the landmass is fairly lush, comprised primarily of tropical and semi-tropical vegetation. The planet has a single moon, Praxis, which is now roughly half its original mass due to an ecological disaster in the year 2293.

A Klingon is easily identified by the distinctive cranial ridges, prominent bone structure, and large stature indigenous to their race. Due to their militaristic culture, most Klingons are considered to be proficient warriors but unpredictable in battle. The Klingon Empire has been at war with both the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, and also aided both against the Dominion.

Although considered savage and brutal by many, the Klingon race is a cornerstone of the Star Trek universe and will undoubtedly be pivotal in its future development.
