The Early Days of the Republic

The exact origins of the Republic are unknown to scholars of our day. However, here we will present what is known, along with a small amount of speculation -- that the universe as we know it started out as individual solar systems and star clusters. As each system developed on its own and eventually discovered space travel, civilizations realized that they weren't alone in the universe. With the invention of hyperdrive, travel between systems became possible.

As civilizations spread forth, they formed trade routes and alliances. An invention known as Holonet allowed instant communications among these star systems. The alliance grew until the systems numbered in the thousands. This "Republic of Worlds" soon became the foremost power in the known universe. After several generations, it was simply known as the "Republic." Of course, this is all simply conjecture on our part - an educated guess, so to speak. However it began, though, it can now be traced back to a period of at least 25,000 standard years.

The Republic's might was augmented by a monastic order known simply as the Jedi, an order of men & women who could tap into the energy permeating all living things, thus greatly increasing their own lifespan and abilities. As a side effect, Jedi were known for their wisdom and patience, making them widely revered as mediators and guardians. The origins of the Jedi are as shrouded in time as those of the Republic. Like the Republic, it seems as if the Jedi have always existed.
