The Jedi Order is one of the oldest and most respected organizations in the galaxy. Formed over twenty thousand years ago in the early centuries of the Old Republic, the Order began as a religious and philosophical movement to find and train those sensitive to the Force. Throughout the Republic's history, the Jedi have often found themselves fulfilling the roles of advisor, mediator, teacher, and ambassador -- roles still in effect today. The Jedi have always considered themselves the servants of both the Force and the legitimate government of the galaxy.
With this in mind, the Jedi have consistently maintained an advisory commitment to the New Republic and its councils during the advent of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. With the recent restructuring of the government due to the continuing pressures of galactic conflict with the Yuuzhan Vong, the Order finds itself in a somewhat unique position, currently poised somewhere between the past and the future.
Within the new structure of the Galactic Alliance, the Jedi Order now falls under the direct jurisdiction of the Diplomatic Corps. Directly answerable to the Chief of State and his Inner Council, the Jedi now fulfill several official roles within the ongoing war effort, and frequently assist both the Galactic Alliance Fleet and Intelligence departments in their attempts to analyze, defend, and bring about a peaceful conclusion to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.
The current command structure of the Jedi Order has recently changed with the recreation of the Jedi Council. The Order is still led foremost by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, but daily administration of the Order and its activities are now handled by the Council and its members as in the time of the Old Republic.
